The Surprise Hit of the Motorshow is … the Volkswagen Amarok

Commercial vehicles are cool; who knew?

You want the real car that people can’t stop looking at? It’s the new, and very cool, Amarok. Price, spec and pics, after the jump.

Built in Argentina, the Amarok is essentially a competitor to the longrunning Toyota Hilux. Unlike the evergreen indestructible Toyota however, this car looks like something you can drive around and not be mistaken for a workman. Hell, you might even be allowed to park at a hotel or two.

Under the hood, there’s a stout 2.0-litre twin-turbo turbodiesel four-cylinder, with 160bhp on tap and a nicely notchy six-speed manual gearbox. Prices start at AED80,000, but don’t take them as gospel – it’s very likely that when the car arrives next year, the diesel would make way for one of VW’s also-excellent turbo petrol mills. Probably the 160bhp TSI, so no GTI fantasies for you lot!

Nice, isn’t it? As truck interiors go, this is one with the swankiest and will come with all the mod cons, from bluetooth to a proper stereo. Offroad junkies will be pleased to know that this comes with a proper low range box and even a rear diff lock.

Frankly, I can’t wait to get my hands on one.
