2022 Lamborghini Urus Review: A Real Lambo?

Against all odds, the 2022 Lamborghini Urus is actually a proper Lambo…at least, the modern version

File this under the category: A Bridge Too Far.

Everyone knows Lamborghini has history with SUVs – think back to the mental LM002 of the 1980s. But while that was the cash-starved last gasp of a company out of ideas, the oddly-named Urus is a typically-Germanic, customer-clinic’d vehicle designed for the very heartland of the modern buyer – the SUV.

Underpinned by the same MLB Evo platform that you find under the Bentayga, Cayenne and Q7, the 640bhp/627-lb ft 4.0 twin turbo V8 Urus shouldn’t work on paper. It’s far from the prettiest Lambo, either. Against all odds – it does.

It’s comfortable on road, blisteringly quick through the bends and feels downright violently fast at the upper end. I have no idea how good it is offroad, but since this is not the place or the insurance bracket for Tax-The-Rich style antics, you’ll have to assume it can get up ski slopes and the like. It’s got all the electronics under the sun, but there’s only so much you can expect from 23-inch wheels when the going gets tough.

There’s more – as you’d expect. Apart from a slightly finicky interface, it’s a comfortable cabin with the expected gunslit visibility, a booming stereo and proper accommodations for four. As a daily, it works well in everything from standstill traffic to gunning it on highway offramps – to a track day. Yes, should you have the courage this will easily embarrass plenty of junior supercars and quite a few hot hatches. Not bad for a 2200kg+ SUV.

So having experienced the mighty Urus – was it actually a bridge too far? Well, it’ll never be my first-pick Lamborghini, and it lacks a little bit of the instant drama you’ve come to expect from Sant Agata. But honestly, when you give it all the beans, it doesn’t disappoint. Did it have to exist? No. Did it have to be this good? No, again. We should be glad it does exist, it is this good, and it has a future far brighter than the LM002.
