This is the new 2018 Hyundai Accent saloon. It’s got a bold accentuated grille now. Plus there’s massive headlights, and the rest of it is, well, okay too. Which is probably more than can be said for the appalling accents employed in the above video.
Under the bonnet is a 1.6-litre petrol engine with 120bhp driving the front wheels through 6-speed automatic giving a 0-100kph time of a leisurely 11.3 seconds and a top speed of 192kph. There is also a 1.3 available – which is priced at AED50,820 ($13,850). But since an escargot would probably beat it in a drag race, let’s move on.
The 1.6 starts with the 13-GL at AED52,290 ($14,250) and as standard comes with features such as front airbags, ABS, stability control, ISOFIX, tyre pressure monitor, parking sensors, a 4-speaker stereo with bluetooth and remote control on the steering wheel, height adjustable driver’s seat and cigar lighter with ashtray – yes it specifically says ‘cigar’ on the spec sheet, a mere cigarette just won’t do.
Fankly though, smoking is very bad for you so don’t do it. Instead check out this top of the range car at AED59,850 ($16,300), and you can tell by the chrome grille instead of black and the alloy wheels.
Boot space is par for the segment, as the character in the video – he was meant to be Jamaican – said:
‘Hey man, wat gwaan with you today? Dis the batty boot right here, and there be loads of space for your stash man. Hey no man, I don’t mean nothing like that, I ain’t a bawd bai. But when you get to where ya going, as we all eventually must, collie man gonna find he coulda put a lot of tings in here.
‘Especially if he make use of the split-folding rear seats. Anyway you all stay cool and be jammin, and don’t worry about a ting, because everyting gonna be aright.’
The rear compartment is pretty usable too as the India persona confirmed:
‘Hun bai, a decent amount of room back here nah? Yeah I could easily fit five, six… maybe eight family members, no problem. You know they can all sit on top of each other it’s okay.’
Ahem…. please note that we simply do not endorse or encourage overloading cars. Only the correct number of passengers may be seated in a vehicle as a maximum and each must wear a safety belt, or in the case of children be secured in a suitable baby, child or booster seat. Anyway, he wasn’t finished yet…
‘Oh yah, I must tell you that this range-topper comes with this standard armrest, so I can be sitting in comfort, like this, and then barking orders at the driver, asking who the bloody hell gave this fellow a licence. Huh? Huh?
‘Oi. Abe yaar, look it even has rear a/c vents. Kay baat hai! Chalo, time to be in front!’
And then I got me old mucker to take a look at the front compartment.
‘Awright mates? Yeah, you naow wot else this fully loaded Accent gets? Well let me tell ya sunshine. You got a reversin’ camera in this nifty little touch screen ‘ere, which, when you got your fone hooked up to it, even shows you who you’re listenin’ too.
‘In fact, this one’s got half a dozen speakers for banging out all yer favourite ding-dongs innit? It’s got reach-adjustable as well rake-adjustable steerin’ for those short-arses amongst ya and a sunroof!
‘Oh that’s not all, you got cruise control and electronic chromic mirror, whatever that is when it’s at home. No paddles, but you can sequential shift the gearbox.’
Reverting to norm for the next bit – it drives better than you have any right to expect for the money. It’ll move with decent enthusiasm and corners handily, despite an inherent desire to understeer, lack of feedback from the helm and a bit of body lean. The ride isn’t too bad at all, and the engine does get a little intrusive at higher revs but isn’t jarring.
You can have a bit of fun with the car if you really want to by throwing it around hard, but overall it’s a competent performer that’s specifically designed to a remit – that is to provide affordable and practical transportation.
