The all-new 2016 Toyota Fortuner, is a stylish thing. In fact Toyota is so proud of the styling it’s put the outline onto the key fob itself – or is that in case you forgot what your car looked like?

In fact it is a handsome beast, and things get even better inside, particularly when you consider this vehicle’s humble origin as being based on the Toyota Hilux. It’s all rather plush and soft-touch with infotainment borrowed from the Toyota Prius.

Proper rear suspension gives it a good ride, and there’s decent rear space, although it’s best to leave the third row for kids or emergencies. But this is generally a very practical and useable family SUV  that doubles as a handy-load mover when you need it. But with luxuries like rear entertainment in the top spec cars, it has a lot of showroom appeal.

There’s all the off-road controls – 4WD high and low, locking diffs, etc, but also paddle shifts for the transmission and Eco mode as well as a Sports mode. You get either a 2.7-litre 164bhp four-cylinder engine or the range-topping 4.0-litre V6 with 235bhp as tested here.

Taller drivers should try it out before buying, but you certainly get a feeling of being tall in this car, because it’s very high-riding. But it’s a narrow thing, and the controls are light and easy making it a surprisingly capable around town.

Not a sporty thing though, you won’t want to be throwing this car around, but then that’s not what you’d buy this for, although V6 performance doesn’t exactly leave you wanting.

Verdict

This latest iteration of the Fortuner certainly elevates the quality and luxury elements of the pick-up-based SUV, to give it tons more showroom appeal and the hand price makes it must for the shortlist especially if you were contemplating a new Prado.
