New Renault Duster headed for Frankfurt

Renault’s inexplicably popular SUV gets an update for Frankfurt

Dacia Duster

It’s no secret that we’re no huge fans of the Renault Duster here at MME; it stands as one of the least-equipped, least-fun driving cars I’ve ever had the misfortune of driving. And despite my nearly effervescent hate for this strange little car, it remains one of the most popular articles on the site, not to mention a fairly substantial success for local importer Arabian Automobiles, as well as being a huge hit in developing markets like India. In fact, this diminutive Duster is Renault’s best selling car, world wide. The Duster’s cheap charms, it seems, are here to stay.

But not necessarily the same. After a scant three years in production an all-new Duster is on its way to the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, though Romanian manufacturer Dacia is not revealing any specifics about the new version. Obviously, it will remain a station wagon-esque four wheel drive (with optional 4×2) and be powered by a sub-two-litre petrol and diesel engine.

Beyond that, anything is up for grabs. The current Duster has a woeful four-speed so any extra rations will improve fuel economy, while the cabin could do with some sprucing up – and while they’re at it, I’d like to know which way I’m indicating this time, in addition to electric mirrors and hopefully a telescoping steering wheel. On the safety front there is huge scope for improvement; Duster does not have standard fit ABS or stability control, nor curtain airbags.

Ball’s in your court Renault – can you make a better Duster, and still keep it cheap?
