Here’s the all-new McLaren 570S – this is the car that the British sportscar maker hopes will take sales off the Porsche 911.
First the essential facts: as you’d expect from the name it puts out 570PS (562bhp) at 7,400rpm from its 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo in addition to 443lb ft at 5000-6500rpm. Weighing only 1313kg, it puts that torque to the rear wheels through a seven-speed transmission.
When all that hooks it up, it catapults the car from 0-100kph in just 3.2 seconds (0-200 in 9.5secs) and onto 328kph.
It’s about the same length and height as a Porsche 911 Turbo, but 215mm wider. The Macca does weigh over 350kg less, and has more power, though less torque, as is two-tenths quicker in the 0-100 benchmark, and is 13kph faster in top speed.
The mid-engined carbon-fibre sportscar bows at the New York Auto Show tomorrow where hopefully there will be more information about the price. In the Middle East, McLaren are taking orders now, with first deliveries expected by December this year.
In terms of styling it represents a sort of mini P1 with the now familiar new family face, but the rear inspired more by the P1 rather than the 650S car’s rump that’s still reminiscent of the MP4-12C. It’s a pretty car, if not quite distinctive enough to separate it from its bigger brother.
The interior seems better conceived and more liveable, and accordingly McLaren claim this car will be more usable on a day-to-day basis having made it easier to get in and out of. Leather upholstery is standard, racing seats are optional, and there’s more interior storage than previous McLarens.
It also gets a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen in the ‘floating’ centre console with an 8-speaker sound system that can be upgraded to a Bowers & Wilkins 12-speaker system with1280W of power.
