Porsche logo + Blackberry = Hoo Mama, that’s an expensive phone

UPDATE: We’ve got a price! Click through for the details.

Porsche obsessists, your next bit of preposterously-priced branded kit is nearly here.

Feast your eyes on the all-but-confirmed new Blackberry Bold from Porsche Design, which we hear will be called the ‘Knight’. Underneath the glitzy new body, it’s the Bold 9900, RIM’s new top of the line handset.

I’m a big fan of the old Bold – it’s a great simple phone that does two things very well – making calls and messaging. The Bold 9900 is bigger, with a touchscreen and a nice, more comfortable keyboard. All things Porsche has chucked away in the redesign, with the sharp vampire fang keys and square cut design that reminds you of Stuttgart precision. Then again, when was a Porsche last called, “stunningly beautiful”? So it is, with the Knight.

The phone’s being launched today at an event at the Burj restaurant (you know the one, it’s very high in the sky…) We’ll let you know the price when it’s released, but don’t expect any bargains. The price of the Porsche Bold is being quoted as US$2000, or Dh7,390 in our local coinage, which is a nice bit of markup considering the regular Blackberry Bold goes for around Dh2,800. For that price you also get a ‘special’ PIN which starts with a prefix of 2AA, which apparently is the first time RIM’s done that for anyone ever, and necessary in a market which craves ‘customisation’, said the firm in a statement to The National daily.

Hey, if you’re the sort of person who puts their PIN on their rear windshield, this is simply the next logical step of progression. The rest of us will just be left feeling inadequate…
