Following the reveal last month of the all-new Chevrolet Camaro, the bowtie brand’s now taken the wraps off of the convertible version.

Chevrolet claims the svelte new droptop sheds 200lbs (90kg) compared to the outgoing version. As with the coupe, the convertible is underpinned by Cadillac’s ATS platform underneath, promising a nimble, more agile muscle car as opposed to the full-sized Zeta-platform-based fifth generation Camaro.

In a first for the segment, the Camaro SS sports an automatically deploying tonneau cover, which covers up the mechanical gubbins used to erect the folding roof. Said roof can also be lowered fully automatically – without having to unlatch headers, as in rival Mustang – at speeds of up to 48kph, and operated from the keyfob.

Powertrains are as the Camaro coupe, so expect engines ranging from a 275bhp 2.0-litre turbo, to a 335bhp 3.6-litre V6, finishing with the mighty 455bhp 6.2-litre LT1 V8, all available with either six-speed manuals or GM’s new eight-speed auto.

Expect the new Camaro to go on sale in the US early next, and reach the Middle East by summer.
