Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
In supercar years, a decade is a lifetime. That’s how long Lamborghini’s evergreen Gallardo baby supercar has been around – and it’s a tribute to how timeless the design that even ten years later it remains utterly desirable. With more than 14,000 units sold since 2003, the Gallardo is the most successful car to ever roll off the Sant’Agata factory line; Lambo needs its replacement to be an absolute heartstopper.

You know what? I think they’ve done it. Meet the Huracán LP610-4. I’ll wait for you to collect your jaw off the floor.

OK. Let’s proceed. As always Lamborghini derives the names of its cars from fighting bulls; in this case Huracán was a Spanish Conte de la Patilla bull from 1879 ‘known for his courage and strong sense of attack’. While we’re all wondering how to pronounce it, here are the vital statistics: a hybrid chassis of carbon and aluminium, a dry weight of 1422kg and a new 5.2-litre direct-injected V10 powerplant that does 610bhp at 8,250rpm and 413 lb/ft of torque at 6,500rpm, both outputs up on the old Gallardo.

Speed? This will decimate the old girl with a top speed of more than 325kph and the 0-100kph sprint in 3.2 brisk (and no doubt loud) seconds. Unbelievably, Lamborghini is claiming that this monster will consume a mere 12.5 litres of petrol every 100km, barely more than your average V6 thanks to a clever stop-start system.

The interior is all-new and features LED lighting throughout as you would find in a Mercedes S-Class. What you won’t find is a manual gearlever; yes, the Huracán has bid ‘arrivederci’ to the stickshift and in its place is an all-new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a new ‘dynamic driving system’ with three driving modes: Strada, Sport and Corsa. Which probably translates to Fast, Really F*****g Fast and Say Goodbye To Your Licence, but in actuality they tweak the engine, transmission and stability control. You can also expect carbon-ceramic brakes available as an option and the Gallardo’s traditional four-wheel drive system keeping you (hopefully) planted to the tarmac.

The Huracán officially makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next year but it’ll be first appearing in more than 130 preview events in 60 cities around the globe. I’ll have mine in Nero White please…and lucky (real) owners can expect their deliveries in Spring 2014.
