Frankfurt 2013: 2014 Mercedes S-Class Coupe
Stunning S-Class Coupe draws on CLA…and BMW?
By Imthishan Giado
Don’t be fooled by the ‘Concept’ tag: this is is exactly what the upcoming S-Class Coupe is is going to look like. Ditching the old CL-moniker, the new S-Class is deeply influenced by the design of the CLA with the same shark-nosed snout unfolding over jewel-like LED headlamps, gaping power intakes and a twin-ribbed hood that says..for somebody’s pleasure, anyway.
Where the old coupe had gently swollen hips to emphasis the fact that it is rear wheel drive, the new car tones down those elements to effect a bio-organic appeal of metal twisted into liquid shapes terminating in a rear end that’s distinctly very BMW Gran Coupe, rectangular tail lights squeezed into an angular tail.
Even more proof that this is not a concept rests in the production-ready interior which draws heavily up on the production S-Class. Joining the dual 12.3-inch digital displays is another mini LCD touchscreen mounted low in the centre console, showing a trio of world clocks.
The steering wheel is a three spoke item unlike the sedan’s two-spoker, the mood blue lighting is pure concept (but wouldn’t it be nice if it made it to production?) and the seats are way too extravagant to be production items, but otherwise the S-Class Coupe looks good enough to roll out the showrooms right now.
Under the hood is a 4.7-litre twin-turbo V8 with 448bhp and more importantly, 511lb ft of effortless, continent-crushing torque.
