A sneaky admission: we knew through sources that Toyota would be showing the successor to the Supra at the Detroit Auto Show. What we didn’t know is that it would look this damn good.

Feast your eyes on the FT-1 Concept, which stands for ‘Future Toyota’ and 1 being ‘the ultimate’. Designed by the Japanese firm’s Calty design studio, it draws upon every fast car Toyota’s ever made from the 2000GT, Celica and of course Supra to the more recent 86. The design is muscular, purposeful, purportedly influenced by the shaping force of the wind. Well, the wind hasn’t shaped me lately but it will definitely be a front-engined rear wheel drive car like the Supra. Don’t expect it be called Supra though; that name will stay in the past.

One more interesting design factoid: FT-1 was apparently designed by Calty in cooperation with Polphyony Digital, makers of Gran Turismo..making this one of the first cars in the world to be literally designed in a PlayStation. Boss Akio Toyoda drove the car around a simulated Fuji Speedway and beat his own best time with the Lexus LFA, a feat which convinced him to approve the car for production.

In model-form, that is. Yes, for now this is only a concept. C’mon Toyota, no one’s fooled. You’d be mad not to build this.
