Finally the 911 goes back to being a proper Targa Top – rejoice!

This is now the best looking version of the current iteration of the iconic 911. The 991 version of the legendary rear-engined sports car has been revealed at Detroit in all-new Targa guise.

And thankfully it’s gone back to the traditional Targa open-type style of the 1965 911, rather than the large glass roof format it’s been offering more recently.

The new car gets a distinctive Targa roof bar with a movable front roof section and a wraparound rear window. But whereas you had to physically remove the roof panel before, now it can be done at the press of a button. The roof panel stows behind the rear seats.

It comes exclusively in All-wheel Drive Targa 4 and Targa 4S versions, with the wider rear track and body, equipped with the 6-cylinder Boxer engine.

With PDK auto and Sport Chrono package the 3.4-litre 350bhp Targa 4 gets to 100kph in 4.6 seconds and 280kph.

The Targa 4S gets 400bhp from its 3.8 giving it a 4.2 second acceleration time with the PDK and Sport Chrono and capable of 293kph.

Prices at Detroit have been revealed as $101,600 and $116,200 for the Targa 4 and Targa 4S respectively, with deliveries starting this summer.
