How did the Americans end up with the worst cabin in the new Toyota/Subaru/Scion FT86?

Inconceivable!

The American version of the Toyota GT86/FT86/Subaru BRZ has been revealed and for once – just for once – we haven’t come off worst.

By this point you know the drill – 200bhp, low weight, six speed manual or auto transmission, bla bla bla. To the untrained eye, what Toyota has done is take a Toyota badge off, and apply a Scion one for its American customers. Look closer, however, and you’ll see some slightly different cabin touches.

Here’s the new FR-S (Front, Rear Wheel Drive Sport for the uninitiated)….

And for comparison, here’s the Toyota one….

Did you clock the difference? Yes, it’s in the centre stack. America doesn’t get the push button start, lovely aluminum aircraft-style toggles or climate control that we’ll get. In fact, their switchgear looks like it’s been pinched from the humble RAV4. In all other respects, the car is of course identical, but it’s certainly interesting to note that America has had to decontent the car to hit their $20k price mark, which is what it’s likely to be priced at.

Of course, we haven’t had our pricing yet, but we think you won’t be charged the moon and the sun for it.
