2012 Boxster revealed
New edition of the mid-engine roadster from Porsche
By Shahzad Sheikh
This is the new Boxster, set to have its show debut at Geneva in March. Interestingly Porsche has not bothered with teaser pics and just given us the official images. Thank you!
It’s got a new lightweight body and a revamped chassis. It’s lighter, wider with bigger wheels and gets the new electro-mechanical power steering from the new 911. It’s also said to be more fuel efficient, as if you really cared about that.
Styling-wise, whilst still recognisably a Boxster, there’s shorter overhangs, the windscreen is more forward, the headlights are reshaped, there’s massive scallops on the side now, and an interesting crease-line doubling as a spoiler at the back running through the taillights.
There’s a re-designed, electric hood, now without a cover panel. Somehow there’s more space in this tight two-seater and the interior matches than seen in the 911, which itself was based on the Panamera.
Both Boxster and Boxster S are powered by flat-six mid-mounted engines with direct fuel injection, with 265bhp from a 2.7-litre for the base model (up 10bhp, despite less cubic inches). Boxster S gives 315bhp (up 5bhp).
Of course there’s a seven-speed PDK to get that power to the rear wheels, but a manual six-speed is also available. With the PDK 0-100kph was 5.7seconds for the Boxster, whilst the S does it in 5seconds.
As usual there will be a Sport Chrono Package with dynamic transmission mounts for the first time, to make the experience racier and also Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear axle differential lock.
The new Porsche Boxster and Boxster S are available for order as of today with first deliveries starting in June this year. The basic retail price for the Boxster in the GCC is 53,654 USD, whereas the Boxster S is available from 59,154 USD.
