2014 Detroit Auto Show: Chrysler 200
Smooth and suave new Chrysler 200 bows at Detroit
By Shahzad Sheikh
The all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 saloon has debuted at Detroit and is set to enter the fiercly competitive mid-size sector anew with completely fresh and sleek new styling, totally shedding its rather plain Jane image.
It’s also a complete departure from current Chrysler themes and suggests a sexier, smoother, more European style redirection – unsurprising given the Fiat connection. It’s being described as the new ‘face’ of Chrysler.
Chrysler says: ‘Clean, expressive surfaces define the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200; it’s a timeless American design based on simple elegance. The 200 sedan, with its muscular yet soulful presence, embodies a strong, sculptured exterior that drivers will want to touch and feel. The restrained design is not ornamental or full of line work instead it showcases sensual lines and fluid surfaces, which highlight the coupe-like appearance.’
There will be a choice of two engines available including the acclaimed 3.6-litre V6 Pentastar producing 295bhp and 262lb ft of torque, and a 2.4-litre MultiAir Tigershark four-cylinder unit producing 184bhp and 173lb ft of torque.
They’ll be mated to a 9-speed auotmatic transmission, and automatic part-time all-wheel drive will standard on the V6. Inside the traditional gear selection lever has been replaced with a Jaguar-style rotary dial, making room for a clever centre console which includes storage spaces and charging stations.
It’s a completely new car, and shares its platform with the same Alfa Romeo derived chassis that underpins the Dodge Dart and the Jeep Cherokee, although lengthened in this case.
The 200 will be available in standard, ‘S’ and ‘C’ guises. The former is a sportier more youthful style with gloss black trim, dual exhausts and optional 19-inch Hyper Black alloy wheels.
